South Africa is neglecting its youngest children

South Africa’s youngest children are being failed, with critical gaps in early learning putting their and our country’s future at risk. Despite the 2015 National Integrated Early Childhood Development Policy promising comprehensive services by 2030, progress has been painfully slow. Chronic underfunding and unequal access are holding back vital early learning programs, particularly for children in poorer households.
The numbers paint a heartbreaking picture: only two in three children aged 3-5 have access to early learning programs, and fewer than half are developmentally on track. Government subsidies meant to support early childhood development are woefully inadequate, stuck at just R17 per child per day since 2019. Most centers rely on parental fees, leaving quality education out of reach for many.
Yet, we know that early investment in children lays the foundation for lifelong success. The developing brain is most adaptable in early childhood, making it crucial to provide the care and education young children need to thrive.
It’s time for South Africa to prioritize its youngest citizens. By boosting funding and ensuring equitable access to early learning, we can give every child the chance to reach their potential.
You can make a difference by teaming up with Project Hope to give young kids the childhood they deserve.
