Seven months ago, a sixteen-year-old girl named Thandeka, spent the morning at church. Her heart was happy and her soul was at peace as she drove home with her extended family members. It was a wonderful Sunday morning.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a car swerved and Thandeka’s small body was tossed around in the car. She clutched her stomach and prayed to God to save her unborn baby. When the car finally came to a halt, she turned around to see the lifeless bodies of her family. Alone to face the world. A child herself.
The community raced to the car. This family was so loved by everyone. A good family. A family that always smiled, always tried, and always thanked God for the life that they shared. Shock rippled through this small community within the Valley of 1000 Hills.
Baby Nathi is six months old now. His mother kept him safe through the last month of her pregnancy and he was welcomed into the world by his loving mother. Imagine being a mom for the first time and having to do this alone. Two children lost together. It gives us shivers.
Our Director Sara had heard about this horrific accident. The tragic story stayed in her heart. She wondered what had happened to Thandeka.
Just last week, Thandeka appeared at one of our partner Preschools. Thandeka is thin, tired, and not coping. She has only her child grant with which to purchase nappies for Nathi, feed herself, and survive. This little family is sinking slowly. Thandeka came to ask for help. She can’t go back to school with a baby. She can’t get a job with a baby. She can’t see the way out of this dark cloud.
Baby Nathi was immediately welcomed to our partner Preschool on a bursary from Project Hope. We will be working with Thandeka and Nathi. She needs support and guidance as she navigates her way out of this situation. Nathi and Thandeka are now safe. They have joined our Project Hope family. They will be cocooned with love and affection.
Whilst we help this little family, we would really appreciate it If anyone is able to help them by donating nappies (size 4) and formula (Infacare #2). Nathi also doesn’t have much clothing. He is wearing size 3-6 months. He will soon be in size 6-12 months and the cold weather is en route soon. Donations can be dropped off at our offices at Hillcrest Methodist Church on weekdays from 8-1 pm.
