My name is Summer and I am from Jersey, which is one of the Channel Islands.
My volunteer experience in South Africa was an incredible, eye-opening, and meaningful trip.
The programme was beautifully curated, focusing on a range of children-focused non-profit charities that support under-resourced families in both Durban, where Project Hope is based, and Cape Town.
One of the most powerful moments for me was getting to meet the family that my family has been sponsoring for over four years – putting voices and faces to what until then were just other family names in updates and letters.
It created memories and love for life.
I also had the opportunity to go and see the work of several inspiring organisations, including Focus on the Family, where I participated in a programme aimed at teaching young children in high-risk areas about healthy relationships and the importance of knowing right from wrong – something that isn’t always known.
I visited numerous rural schools and spent time in some lovely rural communities, where I gained so much understanding about many of the challenges they face daily, yet they are still such proud, kind, and loving individuals.
Overall, my experience was humbling and unforgettable, and it left a long-lasting impact on how I see the world and the utter importance of community-driven support.
I have learnt and gained so much from this incredible trip, so thank you to all the incredible people at Project Hope who have helped make this possible.
