Simphiwe is turning three years old this month. He is irresistibly cute with chubby cheeks, sparkling eyes, and a full set of healthy white teeth.

When he first started preschool in 2024, Simphiwe was filled with anger and fear. He had just lost his mother after watching her slowly fade away in front of him over several painful months. At school, he was unkind to his friends—pushing them, being mean, and withdrawing from learning. He lost weight and showed little interest in anything around him. We struggled to reach him.

Throughout it all, his Gogo (Granny) and Umkhulu (Grandpa) stepped in with endless love and care. They nurtured him the best they could. But this year has brought even more heartache. Gogo is growing frail, and now Umkhulu has fallen seriously ill. Over the past few months, Umkhulu has been in and out of the hospital, and little Simphiwe has once again had to witness someone he loves slowly slipping away.

Despite the pain, Simphiwe has grown stronger. He’s gained weight, made friends, and begun laughing and playing again at school. His teachers have wrapped him in love and protection, and the little boy we see today is unrecognizable from the fearful child we met in early 2024.

But today, Umkhulu has returned home, and he is gravely unwell. Simphiwe is terrified as he faces yet another loss. He is only two years old, and his little heart is overwhelmed.

One of his teachers has visited his home to see how we can help ease his pain. What can we do to support this little boy whose life has been so heartbreakingly difficult?

Gogo has decided that, on days when Umkhulu is very ill, Simphiwe will stay at his aunt’s house. He is loved in both homes, but his little heart is breaking.

Still, Simphiwe is clean, well-fed, and cherished. Despite the poverty that surrounds him, his sponsor has made it possible for him to attend preschool. There, he receives not only a good education but also love, nourishment, and safety during times of fear. Simphiwe is currently receiving extra food, attention, and tenderness. His heart is being protected as best as we know how, by a community working together to love and support this struggling family.

At Project Hope, we’re not just about preschool education. We’re about giving each and every child what they need to thrive. Simphiwe, like all our children, is unique. We know his heart, and we know his story.

Baby boy, you are blessed with hope through the people who surround you and love you. And everything you need to become the very best version of yourself, we will fight to provide—no matter what it takes. We have this little family in our arms.
